일렉 기타를 시작하면서 스케일, 펜타토닉만 연습하는 것은 뭐 재미 없는 것은 아니지만, 가끔 지루하게 느껴질 때가 있습니다. 뭐 국수말아 먹듯 손가락이 술술 잘 풀어지고 움직여주면 기타 소리가 멋지게 뿜어져 나오는 것 자체로 희열을 느낄 수 있는 일이지만, 그렇지 않고 띵띵거리는 초보 시절에는 좀 힘들어지는 게 사실입니다. 

메트로놈 틀어놓고 거기에 박자를 맞추는 작업(?)도 여간 진땀이 나는 일이 아닙니다. 그럴 때 아는 노래의 음계를 찾아가며 박자를 느껴보는 것은 처져있던 기분을 일으켜 세워주는 또다른 재미가 됩니다.

아마존에서 기타 교본책을 찾아보면 음악이론에 충실한 좋은 책들이 많이 있습니다. 그런데 이론의 흐름에 충실한 책들은 조금 지루해지는 단점이 있습니다. 그 틈새를 공략하여 쉽게 접근하며 나름 진도를 좀 뽑아주는, 쉽게 쓴 책들이 더러 있습니다. 그런 책 중에서 지판을 쉽게 익히는 방법, 간단히 기타를 파악하고 쉽게 노래 하나 쳐보게 하는 방법을 보여주는 책들도 있습니다. 그런 책들 중에 기타 헤드(Guitar Head)라는 곳에서 나온 초보자용 시리즈들이 있습니다. 

초기에 지판 외우는 요령을 보여주는 책이 도움이 많이 되었습니다. 그걸 보고 단번에 그 많은 지판을 다 외우는 것은 사실 있을 수 없는 일입니다. 하지만 기타 음치가 기타 지판을 단기간에 파악하는데는 지대한 기여를 해주었습니다. 그 출판사에서 나온 책 중에서 매일 꾸준히 연습하는 요령, 쉬운 곡 단기간에 쳐보기, 뭐 그런 것들이 있어, 아마존을 통해 이북(ebook)을 구입했습니다. 종이책은 비싸지만, 이북은 10불이 채 되지 않아 부담이 없습니다.

그렇게 기타 헤드의 책들을 구입하면 작은 팁과 노하우, 기타 관련 도움이 되는 이슈들을 가끔씩 이메일로 보내오는데 도움이나 참고가 되는 내용들이 있습니다. 오늘도 이메일을 하나 받은 것이 있어서 소개합니다.

오늘 받은 내용은 타브 악보로 기타를 배우는 것이 좋지 않은 것인가에 대한 의견입니다. 결론은 나쁜 것이라고 볼 수 없고, 초보 시절에는 기타를 배우는데 상당히 도움이 되고, 심지어는 지판을 익혀가는 데도 도움이 된다는 내용입니다. 하지만 그것을 악보처럼 음악적 도구로 마냥 쓸 일은 아니고 연주에 익숙해지면서 타브에서 악보로 자연스럽게 전환이 된다고 이야기를 합니다.

Is learning from TAB bad? 

If you spend enough time online, you’ll eventually come across many people seriously criticizing guitar TAB. Some say, "Learn by ear." Others insist, "Learn notation properly."

Honestly, both sides are right in their own way. But that doesn’t mean you should completely ignore TAB.

For a beginner, learning the guitar itself is already a huge challenge. Fretting the right notes, producing a clean sound, developing right-hand coordination, maintaining posture, and even holding the instrument properly can feel overwhelming in the beginning.

Frankly speaking, learning standard notation takes time. It’s a language in itself, and on guitar, it’s not always easy. But it’s also an incredibly powerful system. With notation, you can understand rhythm, dynamics, phrasing, and almost every important detail of the music on paper. In many cases, even if you’ve never heard the piece before, you can still reproduce it accurately just by reading.

Of course, some people are naturally gifted with their ears and can pick up everything just by listening. But not everyone starts there.

That’s why beginners often need a simple system that helps them focus on actually playing the instrument without getting buried in too much theory right away. TAB is exactly that. It’s one of the easiest ways to write guitar music on paper, and it allows beginners to focus on technique, confidence, and musical enjoyment.

Is TAB a complete language for music notation?   No.

Is it practical and beginner-friendly?  Absolutely.

For example, unlike standard notation, TAB usually doesn’t show exact rhythm. So what’s the solution?

I remember during my early days of learning guitar — back in the pre-YouTube era — I would listen to songs or licks while reading TAB at the same time. I used TAB to locate the notes, and my ears helped me understand the rhythm, feel, and phrasing.

As I became more comfortable with the fretboard, I slowly began learning songs directly by ear. Was it perfect every time? Not at all. But my listening skills improved naturally in the process.

Much later, I got into standard notation, and I can’t deny how much it improved my rhythm and overall musicianship. It even helped me play keyboard parts, saxophone melodies, and vocal lines on guitar because notation is truly a universal language.

But it all started with TAB. TAB gave me the room to focus on technique, build confidence, and move forward.
